Will, would

In this lesson, you will explore the use of the modal verbs will and would to express the future.

Will is used to expressing promises, to take decisions in the spot, to make predictions, to offer for help and to express an uncertain future. On the other hand, would is used to express formality.

So, if you want to ask and order food, drinks and other services you may need to master this topic.

Use the modal would and the auxiliary will in everyday life situations, for example asking, and ordering food and other services.

Content

Look at the following chart. We use the auxiliary will

when offering to do something for someone.

Notice that will is used when you offer something. Take a look at the examples:

I will do it for you.
I will pay for the inconveniences.
I will help you to carry those bags.

Requests

Every time someone asks for something in a less formal way he or she can use will.

Will you close the car, please?
Will you get some cheese when you come home, please?
Will you pass me that bottle of water, please?

Promises to do something

Whenever you promise something the best way to do it is through the use of will.

I will wait for you.
I will be here as soon as you come back.
I will cook the turkey next Christmas.

Spontaneous decision to do something

If you decide at the moment of speaking you have to use will, it is not planned. Remember a quick decision.

I forgot the homework. I will not enter the class
I forgot to ring Paul. I will do it now.
The window is opened, and it is freezing. I will close it!

You use would to politely request what we want

• I would like a cup of tea, please.

To order someone.

If you are asking other people to do things, you would normally use:

Would you + infinitive.

• Would you bring the dessert for the party?

Would you like to…?

Would you like to…is also a very polite way of suggesting or requesting something.

• Would you like to study for the exam?

Politeness

If you want to sound particularly polite, or if you think the answer may be negative, you can also use:

Would you mind + verb-ing

Do you like hamburgers? Aren't they delicious? What are the best hamburgers you have ever eaten? Well, now you are going to read a text about the best hamburgers in Japan. To better understand the text at the end of the activity, answer some questions.

When will we have the perfect hamburger? We already have many kinds of hamburgers! The food industry uses a variety of ingredients, and now hamburgers are the most common in any home.

The Hokkaido Company in Japan makes the Auto burger, an automatic self-stand to prepare hamburgers. The stand has sensors, which detect what people's preferences, and tries to respond to them. The robot can detect the best ingredients for your hamburger while you relax with a glass of lemonade! Also, the company now makes a robotic drink stand. Like the automatic self-stand to prepare hamburgers, the drink stands automatically detects what your favourite flavours and textures you prefer in a drink.

Hamburgers like this are becoming quite popular in Japan, and Hokaido Company expects that they become a success outside Japan. A well-designed hamburger has the perfect ingredients, and the exact amount of flavour every food lover dreams of. Besides, the hamburger will be adapted to the calories that your body needs in the specific moment of its creation.

Also, what the process will be? “You enter a cabin, your body is scanned, and a voice asks you five questions to detect your preferences,” says Tanaka, the engineer in charge of the project. Questions such as: what side dish would you like? What term would you like the protein? among others. All the process lasts about 5 minutes until you have a very delicious design hamburger for you. Meanwhile, you can enjoy watching videos or anything on the web in the cabin.

The cost is pretty much the same as in any fast food restaurant on the planet. The ingredients are a first quality choice. Would you like to try them? I bet you would.
